HELICOPTER DROPS IN ON HIGHFIELDS YEAR FOURS
Dead grass rained down like snow on 120 very excited Year Fours, as the ‘Australian Helicopters’ Bell 412 landed on the Highfields State School oval. The visit was part of the students’ education about simple and complex machines. The Bell 412 is an extremely complicated machine.
“It’s a great piece of machinery that Australian Helicopters use for training and search and rescue, in support of the military,” explained pilot, David Hampshire, Base Manager of Australian Helicopters, Oakey. Incidentally, his daughter Eliza, just happens to be in one of the Year Four classes!
Mr Hampshire had the knack of making the ‘complex’ easy to understand and explained how the $250,000 rotor blade was really an inclined plane, which varies its pitch depending on the work expected of it. The leading edge of the blade was really a very expensive steel and titanium wedge that sliced through the air. He also informed us about how gears, wheels, axles and screws all made this $8M machine function effectively.
“It was a great experience to see all the simple machines which combined to make this amazing helicopter, sitting on our own back oval,” remarked Abby Love, a student of 4B.
“It was an exciting visit which made learning come alive,” concluded Mrs Roberts. “It was a great way to complete our unit of study.”
